The Benefits of Soil Testing

The main purpose of soil testing is to measure the pH, or acid/ alkyd levels, knowing that a neutral pH level is best for maintaining a healthy, flourishing lawn.
An additional step to test for not only MacroNutrients, phosphorus and potassium, but MicroNutrients as well will present Turf Md’s an even clearer understanding of overall lawn health and how best to treat it.
How is your lawn soil tested?
Turf Md’s will collect soil samples from multiple areas of your yard to make sure we get your lawn’s average pH level. The collected sample is sent to a lab Turf Md’s has specifically selected for evaluation.
What do soil tests report?
The test results include the pH level and following MacroNutrients:
- Phosphorus
- Potassium
For an additional fee, test results can also include the following MicroNutrients:
- Soluable Salts
- Calcium
- Magnesium
- Boron
- Manganese
- Zinc
- Sulfur
How is soil pH be corrected?
Using the lab results Turf Md’s will recommend any necessary supplements to correct the pH imbalance and create an optimal environment for grass to grow. The most common treatments are provided by Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium. The amounts of each of these amendments to apply and the number of treatments is calculated to provide maximum results without harming your lawn.
How soon will I see the results of a pH corrected lawn?
Additives to correct pH imbalance are slow working to change your soils pH and therefore your lawns overall health will occur over months. It may take as long as full season from time of first application to notice the benefits.
How often should soil tests be performed?
Turf Md’s recommends a bi-annual checkup, best done in spring so any corrections to the soil can begin to take effect in the same growing year. Once the soil is balanced we recommend a test every 3 years.
